Things My Mother Taught Me
"Things my mother taught me" is based on the story in the Book of Mormon about Helaman and his 2000 stripling warriors. They had such incredible faith that the Lord would protect them when they went to war. They knew it because their mothers taught them. This is one of my favorite stories in the Book of Mormon.
I was reading the story one day and decided I wanted to stitch a pattern based on them. It didn’t take long to get the idea on paper just the way I wanted, but I was having trouble with the verse. I wanted to get it just right. I decided to pray for guidance, but nothing came of it until I was driving down the road a few weeks later and it hit me like a slap in the face. I had to pull of the side of the road and write it down.
The verse reads:
Things my mother taught me:
Eat your vegetables
Share your toys
Be honest and valiant
Trust in the Lord
While I was selling these through Mormon Handicraft, they asked me to change the verse slightly to:
Things my mother taught me:
Be kind and generous
Count your blessings
Be honest and valiant
Trust in the Lord
I personally like the original because I think it shows the importance of having balance in your life. It's the one that hangs in my daughter’s dorm room. (Both verses are included in the package).
This was stitched on Aida 14 ct. fabric and measures 10 1/2" x 7 1/2" when complete. Both verses are included in the package.
